Kansas City Optometric Society (KCOS)
Trustee: Alan Wegener, OD

For the first quarter of 2017, Kansas City welcomed a series of excellent speakers to our meetings.

We have expanded our meetings which include CE credit, to be worth two hours instead of one. In February, Dr. Anthony DeWilde, OD, who practices in the KC VAMC, brought a great presentation on “Autoimmune Disease and the Eye.”

For March, Xiidra provided dinner at Fogo de Chao while presenting us with prescribing information, recommendations, and clinical data for their brand new dry eye therapy. In April we gathered at the Up-Down arcade downtown for a social meeting with no CE. Everyone in attendance enjoyed the atmosphere and friendly competitions, and the society hopes to hold more ‘social-only’ meetings in the future.

Drs. Ryan Broyles, OD, and Beth Bazin, OD, provided great presentations on Low Vision and Binocular Dysfunction, respectively, worth two hours CE total. They gave us a great reminder what these treatment options can do to quality of life in our patients.

Our legislative BBQ is scheduled for June 5th, at Loose Park, as a thank you to all our area legislators.

Northeast Optometric Society (NEOS)
Trustee: Kevin Harris, OD

The NEOS hosted MOA President Jason Lake and MOA Executive Director Lee Ann Barrett at AJs in Macon, MO on March 9th.

Dr. Lake led the conversation on the importance of the coordination of benefits between health and vision plans, especially for our diabetic patient population.  He explained how it was a win for our patients, our practices, and for the health insurance companies that need the information for Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) reporting.

We also discussed the Optometric Non-Covered Services Bill and the resources the MOA has available to evaluate our vision plan contracts in light of these changes to the law.  Photos were taken
with “Gabby the Gavel” as she continues her presidential tour.

Northwest Optometric Society (NWOS)
Trustee: Steven Rosenak, OD

The NWOS is active and ready to participate in the greater MOA.

Dr. Steven Rosenak of St. Joseph, MO. was sworn in at the MOA Fall Conference in Branson, Missouri as the new trustee. Dr. Rosenak has served in the past as trustee and president, and is currently updating our key person list and reaching out to non-AOA/MOA members in our society. He looks forward to bringing together all Optometrists in Northwest Missouri. Continuing education lectures and increasing membership are goals for this year.

St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS)
Trustees: Jason Riley, OD & Steve Rosen, OD

The St. Louis Optometric Society continues to meet on the second Tuesday of each month at the Marriott West in Chesterfield, MO.

The New Year began with our January meeting which was sponsored by Ocusoft and NW77th.  Dr. Seema Nanda presented “Eyelid Disease and Blepharitis.”  The discussion ranged from anterior to posterior blepharitis to demodex and beyond.

For February, Hoya Vision sponsored the meeting.  Dr. Greg Hicks presented “Managing the New Pain Points in Optometry.”  His focus was on the changing environment in optometry in relation to vertical integration of the optical industry and new threats from internet and online completion and what we can do as optometrists to differentiate ourselves in our own private practices.

Abbott Medical Supplies and Galanis Cataract and Laser Eye Center sponsored our March meeting.  Dr. John Galanis gave the presentation “Strategies and Success with Premium IOLs.”  His discussion focused on today’s more demanding patients and what current strategies provide for managing these expectations with the most success.

SureVision Eye Centers sponsored our April meeting.  The evening CE was titled “Snippets for Every OD.”  There were specifically three different presentations:  “New Classification System for Keratoconus” by Lawrence A. Gans, M.D., F.A.C.S.; “Ocular Side Effects from Systemic Medications” by Naina Gupta, M.D.; and “Astigmatism and Surgical Management” by Jason Newman, M.D.

The May meeting was sponsored by Fabry Support and Information Group.  Richard Hillman, M.D. presented “Eyes on Fabry.”  The talk focused on Fabry Disease and it’s centration in Missouri and our important role as optometrists in identifying patients with Fabry Disease and getting them directed to the right centers for proper treatment and care.

Southeast Optometric Society (SEOS)
Trustee: Doug Nousaka, OD

The SEOS met in January on 1-22-17 for our Presidential visit with Dr. Jason Lake. Dr. Lake rolled out the agenda for the year. Some great pictures with the gavel were obtained. The meeting was held in Poplar Bluff at Castello’s Restaurant in their new meeting room. The food was excellent. We had 14 members in attendance, which is pretty good considering that road closures were predicted that night due to weather.  Special thanks to Dr. Kramer and her family for putting this meeting together.

We met again in February on 2-22-17 in Cape Girardeau at 36 Restaurant and Bar. The meeting was hosted by Alcon rolling out their Air Optix with Hydraglide products and pricing. We had approximately 18 members in attendance.

In April, SEOS member Dr. Willis Franklin was named Walmart Doctor of the Year 2016 for his region. We would like to congratulate him for this honor.

Our next meeting is scheduled in May on 5-24-17, again in Cape Girardeau at 36 Restaurant and Bar. This meeting will be hosted by Allergan, rolling out the new Restasis packaging and campaign.

Thanks to Dr. Jennifer Howard who organizes most of our society meetings.
