The Greater Ozarks Optometric Society had a very good turnout at our Presidential Visit Meeting along with our neighboring Southwest Optometric Society on December 14, 2011 at the Metropolitan Grille in Springfield. President Jeffery Weaver and Executive Director Lee Ann Barrett joined us for the evening duo society meeting.

On November 1, 2011 we had our annual Legislative Reception at the Oasis Convention Center. It was a very pleasant dinner, and we had an excellent turnout of 26 doctors and guests who honored 14 Representatives and Senators.

Greater Ozark Society members are looking forward to our Society Day at the Capitol, in Jefferson City on February 21st.

Our next regularly scheduled meeting is set for March 20, 2012.

Kansas City Optometric Society (KCOS)
Trustee: Melanie Linderer, OD

In November, we had a successful fundraiser for Representative Dr. Terry Swinger. Dr. Swinger is running for Senate and would be a huge asset for optometry as a senator.

In December, Dr. Weaver spoke to our society about the importance of the Children’s Vision Legislation. He strongly encouraged all members to contact their state representatives and senator and ask them to vote favorably on the legislation. In December, we also had the executive directors for the MOA, and KOA speak.

Our next meeting is February 6. We will have two more legislative days in Jefferson City on February 7 and 29. If you can attend, please contact me at 816-781-2100.

2012 has come quickly and so will the June sunset clause for the Missouri Children’s Vision Law. There are a few ways to help us continue to serve the children of Missouri. Keyperson List – This list has been updated. When Dr. Barrett or I call, please contact your designated legislator(s).

We are joining the Kansas City society and coming to Jefferson City for society days. Expect to spend the late morning with legislators with a possible dinner afterwards. I will email details soon.

Patient Examples/Letters are another way to inform the legislators about the issue. Think about your young patients; if any of them has a touching story about the Kindergarten Eye Exam, have their families fill out the customizable letter. We need examples so the legislators know that these exams truly impact lives.

The other main goal for 2012 is improved communication. I have everyone’s email address but not each person’s detailed information as requested. Please help me by letting me know more about you and your practice. Important Meeting Dates for the Northwest Optometric Society includes joint meetings with the Kansas City Society. The Kansas City Society would like to host Northwest Society for the April 2012 and December 2012 meetings.

If there is any interest in additional meetings just for Northwest, please contact me.

St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS)
Trustees: Thomas Cullinane, OD & Robert Goerss, OD

The St. Louis Optometric Society continues to meet at the Marriott West in Chesterfield, MO on the second Tuesday of the month. The November meeting included a visit from MOA President Dr. Jeff Weaver and Executive Director Dr. LeeAnn Barrett. CE was presented by Dr. Scot Morris.

SLOS is in the process of establishing a new website that will include a history of the society, executive board bios, calendar of events and meetings and the ability to renew membership on line. There will also be a direct link to the MOA website. One of the goals of establishing a new website for SLOS was to create awareness to the local membership that SLOS is one of the nine societies of the MOA and to increase membership interest in the current events of the MOA.

Southeast Optometric Society (SEOS)

Since the October MOA Convention, the Southeast Optometric Society has met in November when we addressed current MOA issues as well as having a lively discussion about local topics of interest.

Since the MOA Convention, the Southwest Optometric Society has met twice. The first meeting was held at the Lazenby & Stilley Eyecare office on November 16, 2011. This was mostly an informative meeting in which I educated the group on the happenings of the 2011 MOA Convention.

Our second meeting was December 14, 2011 at the Metro Grill in Springfield. This was a joint presidential meeting with the Greater Ozarks Society. MOA Executive Director, Dr. LeeAnn Barrett, and MOA President, Dr. Jeffery Weaver, were in attendance and took this opportunity to address the two groups about the important issues currently at hand—primarily the Children’s Vision Bill.

I am very excited about serving as the MOA’s North West Optometric Society Trustee. This is a different situation than most trustees find themselves. I am a member and Vice President of the Kansas City Society, but will be your trustee. I do not see this as a conflict of interest but rather an opportunity for me to serve a larger community of optometrists. I will be trying to contact each of you personally via phone, email or postal mail to learn about you, your practice and your ideas about our profession. So that you can learn a bit about me, I have included below a brief summary of me:

I am originally from Kansas, but my interest in optometry landed me in St. Louis, Missouri. I graduated in 2009, so I am new at this game, but I feel very strongly about protecting and growing our profession. I currently work at Advanced Eyecare in Raytown, Missouri and Advanced Eyecare –South in Raymore, Missouri. My family brings me great joy. I have a large extended family, which makes family gatherings quite unique! I have been married to my high school sweetheart for six years, and together we have a four-month-old daughter, Emma.

Looking forward, I wanted to include what my goals are for this year. This is just a starter list. I would love your thoughts to either mold the suggestions outlined already or create new priorities.

Goals for this year:
Children’s Vision Law – this is set to sunset in June 2012. It is important for the children of Missouri, that this law remains, in effect. Our society and the entire MOA will be increasing our efforts to ensure that children’s vision is protected.

Improved Inter-society and Intra-society communication – from speaking with Ryan Powell, OD, I understand that it is difficult to hold meetings with the ODs in the NW section. This is more than likely from North West being a large geographical area. I want to utilize other forms of communication to both discuss certain topics as a group but also allow me to relay information and ideas to/from the MOA.

Continued efforts for public awareness – do your patients know the difference between opticians vs. optometrists vs. ophthalmologist? Optometry needs to be more recognizable. Public knowledge of our capabilities makes our profession stronger. I would like to continue efforts to make this more of a reality.

I look forward to speaking with every one of you! Please do not hesitate to call (816-322-1872) or email me ([email protected]) with concerns, questions, or comments.

On June 6, 2011, the Optometric Society of Greater Kansas hosted its annual BBQ to thank state legislators for their hard work. Fourteen optometrists, six state representatives, and one senator attended the BBQ. This was our largest and most successful legislative BBQ. I would like to thank all for attending.

The BBQ was filled with lively discussion, excellent food, and children playing. We could discuss with the Legislators the Children’s Vision Bill, its sunset clause, and why it is so important for the children of Missouri to remove this sunset clause. All the legislators expressed an interest in helping with this cause in 2012. Each legislator also discussed his successes during the 2011 legislative session.

As a state legislated profession, it is imperative that we build strong relationships with our legislators. These relationships help the legislators to understand what we do and how we can help the citizens of Missouri. The Optometric Society of Greater Kansas BBQ was a perfect example of how easy it is to establish this grass root relationship. If we hope to be successful in removing the sunset clause on the Children’s Vision Bill, each of us will need to talk to our legislators about this bill and how it helps the children of Missouri.
