Society Reports: Spring 2013

Central Missouri Optometric Society (COS)

Our February society meeting was cancelled due to snow. Our March meeting date fell during Spring Break so we elected to forgo our March meeting.

Therefore, we are eagerly awaiting our April meeting. It will take place Tuesday, April 23rd sponsored by UMB Bank at The Old Hawthorn Country Club. We will be discussing personal and practice financial concepts and trends. We also look forward to our presidential visit during our April meeting.

 

Greater Ozark Optometric Society (GOOS)

The Greater Ozarks Optometric Society had a good turnout at our most recent GOOS Meeting in March. This was our Annual Presidential Visit at Metro Grill in Springfield, Missouri. Dr. Gelvin and Dr. Barrett were able to make the drive down to update our society on the legislative happenings and what the MOA has been doing.

On April 16th, 2013 we will be having a 2 hour COPE approved CE about ORA Wavefront Abberometry at Mr. Yen’s Restaurant in Springfield. The night will be sponsored by Missouri Eye Institute. During the summer months we will take our annual break and then return for an August Election Meeting.

 

Kansas City Optometric Society (KCOS)

The Optometric Society of Kansas City’s next meeting is scheduled for Monday May 6, 2013.

The North East Optometric Society has not met recently during our winter break. Our next meeting will be the Presidential Visit from our MOA President, Dr. John Gelvin.

 

Northwest Optometric Society (NWOS)

No meeting are currently planned for NWOS in 2013, however if there is member interest, we can hold a get-together singly or jointly with the KCOS section.

St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS)

The St. Louis Optometric Society continues to meet monthly at the Marriott West on the second Tuesday of each month.

The March meeting was hosted by Dr. Andrew Blatt of St. Louis Eye Care Specialists. Dr. Blatt discussed “Musings on Medicine.”

The April meeting will be hosted by Diopsys. Dr. Sophia Chung will discuss “Papilledema and Lookalikes.” Dr. Navin Tekwani is scheduled to present in May.

The annual installation banquet will be held at the Kemp Auto Museum in Chesterfield on June 11. St. Louis radio personnel Dave Glover from 97.1 KFTK will be the guest speaker.

Southeast Optometric Society (SEOS)

The Southeast Society meets on the third Wednesday of odd numbered months at the Hickory Log in Dexter, Missouri. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.

We are scheduling a special meeting this April 17th at 6:30 pm, at the Dexter BBQ in Dexter, Missouri. Our special guests will be MOA President Dr. John Gelvin and executive director Dr. LeeAnn Barrett. Society Reports: Winter 2013

Central Missouri Optometric Society (COS)

The Central Missouri Optometric Society had its usual meeting on the fourth Tuesday of the month.

The meeting was sponsored by Diopsys at D. Rowe’s restaurant. Diopsys presented to us on the clinical uses of VEP, office implementation and reimbursement. Dr. Jeff Gamble set up an internet access terminal where central members could complete the MOA survey. We reviewed keyperson assignment information. Our next meeting is February 26th.

 

Greater Ozark Optometric Society (GOOS)

We had many Legislators and doctors that made an appearance at our annual Legislative Thank You BBQ Dinner on November 13th. It was held at the Diamond Room in Springfield, Mo.

Our December 11th meeting was located at Twin Oaks Country Club and was sponsored by UMB Bank. It was a fun and informative meeting with great information about practice financing, estate planning, tax law changes and the fiscal cliff.

Our next gathering will be at Metro Grille on March 12th in Springfield for our annual Presidential Visit.

Kansas City Optometric Society (KCOS)

The KCOS had a delightful Presidential visit in December from our MOA President, Dr. John Gelvin. Our next meeting is Feb. 4, 2013. We expect to have a society website established by March of this year. There will be more information about the society website in the future.

 

Northeast Optometric Society (NEOS)

The NEOS met on Nov 15 at AJ’s in Macon. There were nine members and one guest present. The meeting was sponsored by Ciba with a presentation about contact lens solutions. Our next meeting will be the Presidential Visit from our MOA President, Dr. John Gelvin, in the first quarter of 2013.

St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS)

The St. Louis Optometric Society continues to meet on the second Tuesday of the month at the Chesterfield Marriott.

The November meeting was sponsored by the Pepose Vision Institute. Dr. Nancy Holekamp presented “Cataract Surgery in Patients with Macular Degeneration” and Dr. Mujtaba Qazi presented “Novel Intraocular Implants.”

Midland Optical hosted the annual holiday party that was held at Cardwell’s in Clayton.

The January meeting was sponsored by Alcon and Dr. Pamela Lowe presented “Strategies for Maximizing Patient and Practice Success.”

SLOS continues to develop its new website which can be found at www.stlouisoptometricsociety.org. The site is designed to be interactive and the eventual goal is to allow members and sponsors to pay dues and advertising expenses on-line. Eventually the printed copy of the newsletter will be eliminated and available on-line only. For now it is available in both formats.

Southeast Optometric Society (SEOS)

The SEOS met November 15 at the Hickory Log in Dexter, MO. Dr Charles Aldridge from North Carolina discussed trends in contact lens prescribing. The meeting was sponsored by Ciba.

During our January 16 meeting, we discussed goals for the coming year. The important keyperson list was discussed. We look forward to the MOA Presidential visit by Dr. John Gelvin this spring. Dr Terry Swinger expressed his gratitude for everyone’s support during his senate campaign.

 

Southwest Optometric Society (SWOS)

The Southwest Optometric Society met on Thursday, November 29th at Mythos restaurant in Joplin. Dr. Stilley gave a recap of the recent happenings from the annual MOA convention.

The meeting was preceded by a one hour continuing education presentation by Dr. Richard Hillman from the Fabry Support and Information Group. Also helping with the presentation was Jack Johnson, who has Fabry’s Disease and he was able to provide information about what it was like to deal with the condition.

 

West Central Optometric Society (WCOS)

The WCOS has not had a regularly scheduled meeting this calendar year. We plan a robust attendance at the MOA legislative conference and further discussions on bolstering our keyperson system in our region.

Central Missouri Optometric Society (COS)

The Central Optometric Society congratulates MOA’s Optometrist of the Year, Dr. Tom Greene, and thanks him for all of his hard work for Missouri’s optometrists. We are lucky to have him as a member of our group.

Our October meeting was sponsored by Allergan and we discussed Restasis.

The COS meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month. We will take our usual break for the holidays and we will not be meeting in November or December.

The Greater Ozarks Optometric Society had a good turnout at our most recent GOOS Meeting at Touch Restaurant in Springfield on September 18th, 2012. Dr .Tom Hobbs presented an hour-long CE course for our members about Fabry’s Disease. Dinner was sponsored by FSIG and Genzyme.

Our next meeting is November 13th at 6:30pm at The Diamond Room in Springfield from 6-9. It will be our Annual Legislative Thank You Dinner. We have quite a few Representatives and Senators RSVPs so it should be a wonderful night.

A special congratulations are in order for Dr Scott Burks. He was named the MOA’s Young OD of the year. We are very lucky to have him in our group!

 

Kansas City Optometric Society (KCOS)

The next meeting for KCOS is Nov. 5 at Bo Lings. Our annual MOA presidential visit is scheduled for Dec. 3. It will be a joint meeting with the Northwest Optometric Society. The meeting will be held at Lidia’s Restaurant at 101 West 22nd St. Kansas City, MO 64108.

Northwest Optometric Society (NWOS)

The next meeting of the Northwest Optometric Society will be held as a joint meeting with the Kansas City Optometric Society. It will be held at Lidia’s, located at 101 West 22nd Street Kansas City, MO 64108, on December 4, 2012. St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS)

The St. Louis Optometric Society continues to meet on the second Tuesday of each month at the Marriott West in Chesterfield. The July meeting was presented by Dr. Nathan Hesemann from Surevision Eye Centers where he discussed “Combined Cataract Surgery and Endocyclophotocoagulation for Patients with Glaucoma and Cataracts.”

During the August meeting, MOA’s own Dr. Tom Hobbs presented an “Eyes on Fabry” in which two patients with Fabry’s disease were on hand for clinical evaluation within the UMSL Vision Van. The September meeting was hosted by Paragon CRT and the latest technology and methodology of corneal refractive therapy was discussed.

The Southeast Society met September 19th at the Hickory Log. The meal was sponsored by Genzyme with guests, Dr. Richard Hillman who presented information about Fabry Disease and Jack Johnson, who has the condition. Society members got to examine the eyes of Mr. Johnson so they could recognize the disease if they encountered it in their patients.

Our next meeting is Thursday November 15th when Dr. Charles Aldridge from North Carolina will present “Strategies for Maximizing Patient Outcomes & Practice Success”. Our host is Alcon Laboratories

 

Southwest Optometric Society (SWOS)

The Southwest Optometric Society held a meeting on September 25th at Mythos restaurant in Joplin, MO. Topics of discussion included Dr. Terry Swinger’s Senate race and concerns about recent insurance evolution excluding smaller practices. The meeting was preceded by a presentation by Dr. Steven Vold on the topic of glaucoma and was hosted by Allergan.

 

West Central Optometric Society (WCOS)

The WCOS members had a great turnout at the annual MOA convention in Branson, MO. We are looking forward to a productive fall and good momentum heading into the legislative conference in January of 2013.

Society Reports: Summer 2012

Central Missouri Optometric Society (COS)

Central Optometric Society met at the office of Dr. Tim McGarity in Columbia, MO for our May meeting. Dr. McGarity is establishing himself as a private practitioner specializing in refractive surgery and complicated cataract surgery, including toric and multifocal IOLs. The evening was sponsored by Greg Raeman of Allergan. Greg also gave a very informative presentation on protecting your brand on the internet.

Art Epstein is the expected presenter at our June meeting, and Genentech will be sponsoring our July meeting. COS meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month and rotates between various restaurants in the mid-Missouri area.

Our most recent meeting was May 15th at 6:30pm at Metropolitan Grille in Springfield. It was a regular business meeting with a guest speaker from Zioptan. During the summer months we will take our annual break and then return for an August Election Meeting on the 21st that will be sponsored by Alcon.

The Greater Ozark Optometric Society has a new website. The address is GreaterOzarksOptometric.org. All MOA members and especially GOOS members are invited to check the website out.

On June 4, KCOS had our legislative BBQ. We had 8 legislators attend. Our next meeting will be in September.

The NEOS met on June 20 at the Pear Tree Inn. The meeting was sponsored by Genzyme. A presentation was given on Fabry Disease.

We are all still recovering from the loss of our Children’s Vision Bill. With fresh senators and representatives entering the Senate and House, we should start forming new connections.

St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS)

SLOS held its monthly meetings on the Second Tuesday of the month. We had excellent attendance over the last few months. Speakers included Dr. Dwight Ackerman, Dr. Blair Lonsberry, Dr. Art Epstein, and Dr. John Crane with fourth-year UMSL students Eric Jerde and Suzanne Lackey.

We will be having our annual installation banquet in the living world facility at the St. Louis Zoo on Tuesday June 12th. Our new president will be Dr. Paul Whitten.

Our new SLOS web site is online at www.stlouisoptometricsociety.org. We are still working on our web site. We did decide to use the same web designer of the MOA, Lohman Hills Creative.

We have been promoting Dr. Terry Swinger’s Senate race heavily over the last year. We are asking every OD in our society to give and will continue throughout the campaign until November

Our MOA President Dr. Jeff Weaver and our Executive Director Dr. LeeAnn Barrett provided a good exchange for us in March for our society presidential visit meeting.

The May meeting, sponsored by Alcon included dinner and Dr. Sean Mulqueeny, from St. Louis, who presented a program discussing “The Presbyopic Experience.”

Our next meeting will be on July 18, 2012 at the Hickory Log Restaurant, in Dexter, Missouri. One of the important items during this meeting will be the election of society officers. The Southeast Optometric Society continues to support Dr. Terry Swinger in his campaign for the Missouri State Senate.

On April 17th the Southwest Optometric Society met at Mythos Greek restaurant in Joplin, Missouri. The meeting was sponsored by Shane Helmig of Ista Pharmaceuticals and Dr. Chad Betts presented on the topic of ocular allergy.

The WCOS enjoyed their society day at the state capital in February. We shared our day with the NEOS and made contact with many different members of our state leadership.

We are in the process of planning an August meeting to welcome our esteemed president to the WCOS and officer elections.

In February, we were fortunate to have AMO sponsor our evening at CC’s City Broiler in Columbia where Scott Ghormley informed the group on the benefits of Revitalen contact lens solution.  The current status of the Children’s Vision Law was discussed and a reminder for Keypersons to contact legislatures was made.

Our March meeting was held at The Grand Cru in Columbia.  The evening was sponsored by Allergan, who provided dinner and a presentation by glaucoma specialist John Lind, MD.  The presentation was well received.

April took the group back to CC’s City Broiler in Columbia to hear about the tax and liability advantages of incorporating the right way from a company called Legally Mine.

The Central Optometric Society meets together on the fourth Tuesday each month.

 

Greater Ozark Optometric Society (GOOS)

The Greater Ozarks Optometric Society had a good turnout at our most-recent GOOS Meeting at Mr. Yen’s restaurant in Springfield on April 17th, 2012.   Dr Carol Scott presented a one hour CE course for our members titled ‘Amblyopia as a Window to Neuroplasticity in the Visual System.’  Dinner was sponsored by HTS computer system and drinks by Missouri Eye Institute.

Our next meeting is May 15th at 6:30pm at Metropolitan Grille in Springfield.  It will be a regular business meeting with a guest speaker from Zioptan.  During the summer months, we will take our annual break and then return for an August Election Meeting.

A Fundraiser for Rep. Lincoln Hough will take place on May 3rd at 5:30pm-7:30pm at Bruno’s in Downtown Springfield.  Rep. Hough is running for the 135th District and would like Optometry’s help.  Please come and show your support.

The next meeting of the Kansas City Optometric Society is May 7 2012.

Furthermore, mark your calendar for our legislative BBQ schedule on June 4 2012. Please remember to support Dr. Terry Swinger with a contribution to his Senate campaign. Dr. Swinger is running for Senate and would be a huge asset for optometry and the citizens of Missouri as a senator.

The NEOS met Feb 1 2012 at The Pear Tree in for our presidential visit. Special guests were Dr Jeff Weaver, Dr Leeann Barrett and Jay Hahn. Topics of discussion included Children’s Vision and Board Certification. Our society day is scheduled for Feb 28.

The NEOS society day was Feb 28. Dr Duane Thompson and Dr Bob Sloan visited with our elected officials and educated them on the Children’s Vision bill. The other society members who were unable to attend our society day made personal calls to their senators and representatives.

The January meeting was sponsored by Eye Solutions and a presentation by Dr. Jerome Sherman from SUNY was given where he discussed establishing an AMD center of excellence.

February’s meeting was sponsored by Bausch and Lomb, and a grand rounds presentation was given by the UMSL College of Optometry.

At the March meeting, Ciba Vision/Alcon sponsored Dr. Dwight Akerman.

In April, Alcon sponsored Dr. Art Epstein, who discussed various fresh technologies and therapies for detecting and treating anterior segment disease.

The St. Louis Optometric Society continues to meet at the Marriott West in Chesterfield, MO on the second Tuesday of the month.  May’s meeting will be sponsored by AMO and the benefits of their new Revitalens solution and Blink family of products will be discussed.  The annual installation of new officers will be held in June at the Living World at the St. Louis Zoo.

On February 21st, the Southwest Optometric Society joined the Greater Ozarks Optometric Society in Jefferson City.  Doctors from both societies gave testimony in the Senate Committee Hearing regarding Senate Bill 649.

On April 17th, the Southwest Optometric Society met at Mythos Greek restaurant in Joplin.  The meeting was sponsored by Shane Helmig of Ista Pharmaceuticals, and Dr. Chad Betts presented on the topic of ocular allergy treatment.

The West Central Society has not met this quarter. There have been significant emails regarding legislative efforts in Jefferson City.  We will be sitting up for our Presidential Visit soon.
