The Central Missouri Optometric Society meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month. CooperVision and ABB Consice sponsored our June meeting. Our society took a summer vacation break in July. Our August meeting is on the fourth Tuesday and is being sponsored by Legally Mine. Our society members are looking forward to the MOA Convention in October.

Kansas City Optometric Society (KCOS)

Kansas City took the summer off from having regular meetings. We resume meetings in September with CE provided by Steven Silverstein, MD, at Brio on the plaza.

On August 8th, I attended the HRCC event at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City with Jay Hahn, as representatives of the MOA and the OSGKC.

The society board held a meeting on August 21st to discuss and plan for the coming year.

 

Northeast Optometric Society (NEOS)

The Northeast Optometric Society has not met since the last issue of the Vision Newsletter. We do have a society meeting scheduled for September 18, 2014. All Northeast society members are invited to attend.

 

Northwest Optometric Society (NWOS)

St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS)

The St. Louis Optometric Society continues to meet on the second Tuesday of each month at the Marriott West in Chesterfield, MO. SLOS held its Annual Installation and Awards Banquet on June 10th at Busch Stadium. The new slate of officers for 2014-2015 include:

The July 8th meeting was hosted by Alcon with a presentation by Dr. Sean Mulqueeny entitled “Addressing Your Presbyopic Patient’s Vision Needs” as well as a presentation by UMSL College of Optometry Assistant Clinical Professor Julie Hutchinson entitled “Unusual Cases of Ocular Hypertension.”

The August 12th meeting was hosted by Hoya Vision Care with a presentation given by Carl Klein entitled “Blue Light exposure & protection.” Blair Lonsberry, O.D., M.S. also presented “New Concepts in Ocular Surface Disease.”

Southeast Optometric Society (SEOS)

The Southeast Optometric Society met July 16 at the Hickory Log in Dexter. Dinner was hosted by Vistakon. Dr. Doug Nosacka was elected President for the upcoming year. Other officers are: Dr. Cassidy Obermark, Vice President; and Dr. Jennifer Howard, Secretary/Treasurer.

We are having a fundraiser for Rep. Todd Richardson on Wednesday, September 17th at Tio’s Mexican Bar & Grill in Poplar Bluff. Fajita Dinner Buffet and Cocktails will be served starting at 6:00 PM. Todd has risen as a leader of the House and most likely will be Majority Floor leader this year. He has all the tools to be Speaker and statewide office holder as well. Todd has shown both pro small business and pro optometry values, and we are asking each optometrist in Missouri for a commitment to this fundraiser.

Southwest Optometric Society (SWOS)

The Southwest Optometric Society has not met during this summer. They last met on April 15th at Crabby’s seafood restaurant. Dinner was provided by Allergan and Dr. Shane Kannarr gave a presentation on dry eye and Restasis.

 

West Central Optometric Society (WCOS)

The WCOS did not formally meet during the past quarter. We have been communicating frequently via e-mail on the latest MOA news and developments.

The WCOS has a new member who transferred in from another state and is practicing in Pleasant Hill. He was contacted via email and welcomed to our society.

Central Missouri Optometric Society (COS)

The Central Society meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Our April meeting was at 44 Stone Pub. We enjoyed a presidential visit from Dr. Jim Hunt and had a productive discussion on the state of optometric affairs in our state.

 

Greater Ozark Optometric Society (GOOS)
Trustee: Kory Scullawl, OD

GOOS, along with members from the Southwest Society, welcomed MOA president Dr. Jim Hunt and executive director LeeAnn Barrett at our March meeting held at Metropolitan Grill in Springfield. We were able to visit with Dr. Hunt and and catch up on MOA news with Dr. Barrett

In April, our meeting was combined with a continuing education presentation sponsored by Missouri Eye Institute. MEI provided 1 hour of CE over retinal eye disease.

Our meeting in May was sponsored by Synergeyes at Touch in Springfield. 1 hour of CE was presented by Todd Pfeil from Lincoln, NE.

We are looking forward to our summer break. We will not have meetings in June due to the leadership conference and we will not hold a meeting in July.

Dr. Kory Scullawl will take over the trustee duties for Dr. Katie McElvaine. Dr. McElvaine and her husband Scott are expecting their first child later this year. We wish Dr. McElvaine all the best with parenthood and thank her for 3 years of outstanding service as the GOOS trustee.

Kansas City Optometric Society (KCOS)

Since our visit by President Hunt at our December meeting, we have enjoyed some great CE opportunities.

In February we saw Blake Cooper, M.D. present “Diabetes Update,” at Brio on the plaza, while March welcomed our own Lloyd Dixon, O.D. for a presentation, “Clinical Considerations in the Use and Fitting of Scleral RGP Lenses,” at V’s Italian Ristorante in Independence.

In April, Greg Raeman COE, CCOA, OCS, provided a well-regarded talk on ACOs, titled “Accountable Care Organizations: Back to the Future,” giving an intriguing look on the future of health care. The April meeting was held at Piropos in Briarcliff.

Our May meeting was sponsored by Alcon and held at Fogo de Chao on the plaza. Mile Brujic, O.D. presented a non-CE topic titled, “Addressing your presbyopic patient’s vision correction needs- case based learning.”

For our last meeting before summer break, we historically hold a BBQ, inviting area legislators to attend. This year was held at Longview lake and catered by Jack Stack. In attendance were reps Gary Cross, Donna Pfautsch, Jeanie Lauer, and Ira Anders – all of whom supported our capped fees bill this year. Dr. Barrett and Jay Hahn made the trip in to represent the state association at the BBQ as well.

Area doctors continue our relationship with the KC Free Eye Clinic, providing volunteer exam services to the area’s underinsured and uninsured.

The NEOS Presidential Visit was March 13th at AJ’s in Macon. Dr. Jim Hunt, Dr. Lee Ann Barrett and Jay Hahn were the guests for the evening updating our society on current MOA issues.

 

Northwest Optometric Society (NWOS)

The NWOS is currently on summer break. We had a busy legislative session with a couple of our members making visits to Jefferson City to support our presented legislation. St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS)

The St. Louis Optometric Society continues to meet on the second Tuesday of each month at the Marriott West in Chesterfield, MO.

The January 14 meeting was hosted by Legally Mine and SLOS. The presentation “Understanding Legal Tools: The Key to Lawsuit Prevention and Tax Reduction” was given by Mr. Dan McNeff, CFP and included one hour of CE. The February 11 meeting was hosted by ZeaVision. Sean P. Mulqueeny, O.D. presented “The Dollars and Sense of Dry Eye” for one hour of CE credit.

TLC Laser Eye Centers hosted the March 11 meeting with Philip Custer, M.D. presenting “When is Ptosis More Than Ptosis?” for one hour of CE. The April 8 meeting was hosted by Quantum Vision Center (Formerly Illinois Eye Surgeons) and Michael P. Jones, M.D. presented “The Verion Image Guided System: Digital Surgical Planning & Positioning Tools” for one hour of CE. Dr. Eric Polk presented “Corneal Refractive Surgery Enhancements” on May 13.

The annual installation and awards banquet will be held at Busch Stadium on June 10. Bill DeWitt II will be the guest speaker for the evening.

Southeast Optometric Society (SEOS)

The Southeast Optometric Society meets on the third Wednesday of odd numbered months at 6:30 at the Hickory Log restaurant in Dexter.

On March 19th, Mike Burks with CooperVision hosted dinner and discussed trends in the contact lens industry. At our May meeting we welcomed MOA President Dr. Jim Hunt and MOA Executive Director Dr. LeeAnn Barrett who highlighted positive activity in Jefferson City as well as areas where our legislative efforts had fallen short. It is nice to see a good number of active younger area optometrists as well as veterans exchange ideas about the direction of optometry.

We are lucky in southeast Missouri to have one of the most influential active state representatives, the Honorable Todd Richardson from Poplar Bluff. Area doctors of optometry will be hosting a fundraiser for him on the evening of September 10th. We would appreciate that you note this in your budget so that we can make this a successful event. We invite you to attend our next society meeting on Wednesday July 16, 2014 in Dexter, Missouri.

The Southwest Optometric Society met on April 15th at Crabby’s Seafood Bar and Grill in Joplin. The meeting had very high attendance and the main topic of discussion was our current legislative effort in regards to insurance cap fees. Other topics of discussion included ways of increasing MOA membership and UMSL’s current struggle with improving their facilities.

The Central Society meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month. We did not meet in November or December due to the holidays. Our January meeting will be sponsored by Tim McGarity, MD and it will be held at his office. Dr. McGarity will be discussing iStent, a microtrabecular bypass treatment.

It was our pleasure to welcome our MOA President, Dr. James Hunt, along with members of the Northwest and West Central Optometric Societies to our December meeting.

A number of our society doctors have begun volunteering at the Kansas City Free Eye Clinic one day each month to provide eye care to those who would otherwise be unable to receive proper vision and eye care. After taking January off, our meetings will resume on the first Monday of each month. Our February meeting will have CE presented by Blake Cooper, MD,FACS of Retina Associates.

The St. Louis Optometric Society continues to hold its monthly meetings at the Marriott West Hotel in Chesterfield, MO. The November meeting was sponsored by EMS-Enhanced Medical Services. The evening began with a visit from the MOA President, Dr. Jim Hunt and our MOA Executive Director, Dr. Lee Ann Barrett. Dr. Hunt presented his vision for the MOA over the next year. Resident doctors of optometry, Robert Ensley, Sarah Gore, Amanda Nicklas, and Nick Olberding presented grand rounds for one hour of CE.

The annual December Holiday party was held at Cardwell’s in Clayton and was hosted by Legally Mine. Mr. Dan McNeff, CFP will present “Understanding Legal Tools: The Key to Lawsuit Prevention and Tax reduction” which will provide one hour of CE.

SLOS assisted in sending eleven students to the annual AOA-PAC Congressional Advocacy Conference in Washington, DC from September 9-11. A total of more than 600 students and doctors had the opportunity to learn more about the current legislation affecting optometry.

The Southeast Optometric Society hosted a Legislature Appreciation Dinner on November 6, 2013, at the Port Cape Girardeau restaurant, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Guests included legislators from all over southeast Missouri. We were happy to have our MOA Director of Government Relations, Mr. Jay Hahn in attendance. Also from Jefferson City, our MOA Executive Director, Dr. LeeAnn Barrett. The MC of the night was our MOA President, Dr. James Hunt. The central theme of the night was the importance of building strong relationships with our friends at the Capitol. We have not met since the meeting due to the holidays.

We have had a busy few months! We had our Annual Election Meeting in August. Dr Shawn Yarnell is the new President, Dr Chad Carter is our new Vice President, Dr Emily Thomas is our new Secretary/Treasurer, and Dr Katie McElvaine continues as Trustee.

We held a Continuing Education meeting in September at Touch sponsored by Legally Mine. We also hosted a well-attended fundraiser for Senator Wasson at Metro Grille in Springfield.

We were well represented at the MOA Annual Convention in early October. A big congratulation goes to one of our GOOS members, Dr Wes Kemp, for receiving the MOA’s Optometrist of the Year.

On October 29th, we had a full house at our Legislative Thank You BBQ Dinner at the Oasis Convention Center in Springfield. Great conversations were had between our members and our legislators.

Dr. Ranjan Malhotra presented the continuing education for the August SLOS meeting which was sponsored by B&L. The title of his presentation was “Advances in Keratoconus.”

Synergeyes hosted the September meeting. Jennifer Redfern, O.D. presented “Recent Advances in Contact Lens Fitting Utilizing Hybrid Lens Designs.”

The October meeting was sponsored by Thrombogenics. Kevin Blinder, M.D. and Gaurav Shah, M.D. presented “A Retinal Update: To Inject or to Cut.”

The November meeting will be presented by UMSL College of Optometry who will provide a “Grand Rounds” format. The November meeting will also have as guests, the MOA President, Dr. James Hunt and the MOA Executive Director, Dr. LeeAnn Barrett.

The annual holiday party in December will be hosted by Midland Optical.

Our society plans to attend the Kansas City Optometric Society’s Holiday event on Tuesday, December 2, 2013. This will be our opportunity to meet with the new MOA President, fellow West Central members, and our neighbors in Kansas City. During the summer months, members of GOOS have been taking our summer sabbatical. We will gather again on August 20th at 6:30pm for our election meeting at Mr. Yen’s in Springfield.

St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS)

The St. Louis Optometric Society continues to hold its monthly meetings at the Marriott West in Chesterfield, Missouri on the second Tuesday of the month.

The April meeting was hosted by Diopsys, and Dr. Sohpia Chung spoke on papilledema and pseudopapilledema.

The May meeting was presented by Dr. Navin Tekwani who discussed “Advanced Treatment Options In Ocular Surface Disease” and “A Primer on Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery.” Lisa Salmon of IOP Ophthalmics co-sponsored the meeting with Dr. Tekwani.

The June meeting consisted of the annual installation of officers and awards banquet which was held at the Kemp Auto Museum in Chesterfield. Dave Glover of Talk Radio 97.1 was the guest speaker. Dr. Larry Davis officially installed the officers to serve the St. Louis Optometric Society for the coming year, reminding each of their new responsibilities with the office. He presented new president, Dr. Jason Riley, with a Sacagawea Gold dollar to toss for making important decisions; President-Elect, Dr. Kim Layfield, a whistle; Secretary, Dr. Erin Niehoff, a pad and pencil; Treasurer, Dr. Joe Castellano, received a stack of play money; the Sgt. at Arms, Dr. Drew Biondo was given a badge; and retiring president, Dr. Paul Whitten, a hand clapper. The new “consulting” Vice-President, Dr. Steve Rosen, received a white colonial judge’s wig which he promptly donned!

Dr. Scott Tomasino was presented “Optometrist of the Year” by his business partner Dr. Robert Goerss who composed a barber shop style song to honor Scott for all his years of hard work and contributions to the optometric profession. Dr. Edward Bennett was presented to “R.A. Koetting Memorial Award.” Mike Jobe of Midland Optical was given the “Friend of Optometry” award.

On July 17th, at 6:30 pm, at the Hickory Log Restaurant in Dexter, Missouri we were pleased to welcome Dr. Donald Vanderfeltz who presented “Patients’ Vision Correction, Address Your Presbyopic Needs” A Case Based Learning Dinner hosted by Alcon. There was a short business meeting following Dr. Vanderfeltz’s presentation.

 

Southwest Optometric Society (SWOS)

The Southwest Optometric Society held a meeting on Tuesday, July 16, 2013. It was the MOA Presidential visit. MOA President Dr. John Gelvin addressed our group speaking about the legislative session as well as the projected path of the MOA for 2014.

On Thursday, July 11th, Dr. Dan Brothers, Teresa Brothers, Dr. Justin Stilley, Dr. LeeAnn Barrett, and Jay Hahn attended a bowling fundraiser for Senator Ron Richard.

 

West Central Optometric Society (WCOS)

The last meeting of the MOA West Central Society was Thursday, July 18 at 7 pm in Warrensburg, Missouri. The main items at the meeting was the annual election of society officers and discussions of MOA issues.
