Holiday

The Central Society continues to meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month. We took October off with MOA convention. Typically, we don’t meet in November with the Thanksgiving holiday, but we made an exception this year for our Presidential Visit. We met at Grand Cru where Dr. Cullinane updated our society on the happenings of the MOA, we had a lively discussion that night. We will not meet in December and look forward to 2018.

Greater Ozark Optometric Society (GOOS)

This year we hosted our holiday party at Grunauer. During this meeting MOA President Dr. Cullinane, came and presented the new topics he would like to address for the coming year. Dr. Alan Wegener has been transitioning the new KC trustee Dr. Lauren Seutter into the position. The optometrists of greater Kansas City society are currently looking for a new secretary/treasurer. To finish the year, we had a Young OD CE event, and OneSight volunteer opportunity.

BioD will be sponsoring an evening at Brio on the Plaza to discuss amniotic discs for ocular surface disease. The event was started through Dr. Alan Wegener who has been working to gather young ODs across greater Kansas City.

At the OneSight clinic doctors volunteered to help over 650 students receive the gift of sight!

Area doctors continue our relationship with the KC Free Eye Clinic, providing volunteer exam services to the area’s underinsured and uninsured.

The Optometric Society of Greater Kansas City will resume in 2018. For more information or questions regarding our society, email [email protected].

Continuing education lectures and increasing membership are goals for this year.

Dr. Leslie Wittmann, Maryville, MO, was welcomed as a new MOA member!

St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS)
Trustees: Jason Riley, OD & Steve Rosen, OD

The St. Louis Optometric Society continues to meet on the second Tuesday of each month at the Marriott West in Chesterfield, MO.

The October meeting was sponsored by Heidelberg Engineering and the CE was “Advances in Macular Degeneration: Gene and Cell Therapies” presented by Sabin Dang, M.D. of The Retina Institute.
The MOA Annual Convention was also in October in St. Charles and the convention was again an enormous success. Dr. Tom Cullinane was installed as the new MOA President and we all know the MOA will be in great hands with Tom at the helm! Dr. Jason Riley was also awarded the MOA Young OD of the Year for his involvement with optometry at the private, local, and state levels. Congratulations to both Tom and Jason for their excellent work! Dr. Kurt Finklang, Dr. Doug Huff, and Dr. Alan Kwiatek also received Years of Service awards for achieving 40 years of service to the MOA/AOA. Others include 10 Years: Dr. Renee Lane; 20 Years: Dr. Carrie Hruza; 25 Years: Dr. Charles Bruce, Dr. James Kirks, Dr. Mary Beth Rhomberg; 30 Years: Dr. Deborah Kerber. Congratulations to you all!

The November meeting was also unique in that we were visited by our newly appointed MOA president, our very own Dr. Tom Cullinane, and MOA Executive Director Dr. LeeAnn Barrett. Tom gave an update on the state of optometry in Missouri and his objectives for the year. Tom spoke about upcoming legislation that may be presented for the 2018 Missouri legislative session that includes some type of Patient Protection law that would prohibit Opternative and similar companies from operating in Missouri. He also discussed the MOA Diabetic Initiative that would enlighten the state’s primary care physicians to the help optometrists can give, and standardize reporting forms. Personally, Tom also talked about goals he has for his term in office. He would like to work through the North Central States AOA regional body to introduce a Resolution to stretch the time for new graduates to work their way into full dues, from 5 to 10 years. Additionally, Tom addressed the confusion between vision plans and medical insurance and he feels the AOA should push medical plans to incorporate our care into their plan, eliminating vision plans. He also spoke about the MOA’s desire to change the Missouri Optometry statutes to be an “exclusionary” law that would be specific about things optometrists cannot do, thereby permitting everything else. Tom and LeeAnn both spoke about the work that continues finalizing the MOA’s vision insurance plan that would reintroduce a quality vision plan for state employees. This plan also has the potential to become a popular alternative to vision plans now in the market.

Our December meeting is one of two throughout the year that strays from our normal monthly meetings at the Marriott West. The SLOS Holiday Party in December was again hosted by Midland Optical. Happy Holidays to all!

Kansas City Optometric Society (KCOS)
Trustee: Alan Wegener, OD

For the first quarter of 2017, Kansas City welcomed a series of excellent speakers to our meetings.

We have expanded our meetings which include CE credit, to be worth two hours instead of one. In February, Dr. Anthony DeWilde, OD, who practices in the KC VAMC, brought a great presentation on “Autoimmune Disease and the Eye.”

For March, Xiidra provided dinner at Fogo de Chao while presenting us with prescribing information, recommendations, and clinical data for their brand new dry eye therapy. In April we gathered at the Up-Down arcade downtown for a social meeting with no CE. Everyone in attendance enjoyed the atmosphere and friendly competitions, and the society hopes to hold more ‘social-only’ meetings in the future.

Drs. Ryan Broyles, OD, and Beth Bazin, OD, provided great presentations on Low Vision and Binocular Dysfunction, respectively, worth two hours CE total. They gave us a great reminder what these treatment options can do to quality of life in our patients.

Our legislative BBQ is scheduled for June 5th, at Loose Park, as a thank you to all our area legislators.

We also discussed the Optometric Non-Covered Services Bill and the resources the MOA has available to evaluate our vision plan contracts in light of these changes to the law.  Photos were taken

Southeast Optometric Society (SEOS)
Trustee: Doug Nousaka, OD

The SEOS met on May 18th. It was our first meeting after our presidential visit with Dr. Jeff Gamble. Members were proud to hear of our legislative successes in the house and the senate, and have fingers crossed that our bills get signed. For many years, our society has met in Dexter, MO for our meetings because it is centrally located in our region. The SEOS generally meets 6 times per year, in odd numbered months. When reaching out for support for our local of our local meetings, a few members had stated that they do not come to our meetings because the travel distance is too far. To address their concerns, the decision was made to have a few meetings per year at other locations.

This year, two meetings will be held in Cape Girardeau. We are considering another location for one of our meetings next year. Our next meeting will be hosted by Dan Meinert of X-Cel Contacts and Dr. Ryne Wood of Leet EyeCare. They have put together a scleral lens workshop for our members to be hosted at Leet EyeCare in Cape Girardeau on July 20, 2016. The SEOS also is planning a Legislative Appreciation banquet in Cape Girardeau. We still have not decided whether to hold it in September or November.
